Writing a great blog is difficult if you’re not accustomed to writing for an audience. Everyone seems to be blogging these days, and no one quite feels complete unless they’re attracting and maintaining a loyal readership. Choosing the right content and writing about it in a compelling way is bound to win you readers. If you sharpen your writing skills and write regularly, you can build up a faithful readership and have a successful blog.
You should approach blog writing with concentration not unlike the kind that a businessperson has toward his or her business. Many people treat their blogging like a business, and why not? People are making money from blogging, through Internet advertisement. Businesspersons with the right attitude think about all aspects of the business, from an overall business plan to methods of saving money. They’ll simultaneously search out a business coupon while at the same time brainstorming a new advertising scheme. They’re not willing to stop and get complacent. Even when focusing on something as small as business software coupons, they maintain a singular focus.
Writers with blogs should approach their own “business” with a similar intensity. Begin by selecting a general topic of your blog, such as politics or business. You should have some overarching theme, regardless of how you choose to implement that particular theme. For example, there is a subset of bloggers known as “mommy bloggers,” who write about topics as broad as child rearing, home economizing, working motherhood, child safety products, among other things. One day they’re reviewing a family product, another day they’re telling a crazy story about their toddler. The most successful bloggers will notice which posts attract the greatest response, and then tailor content to those subjects. Maximizing posts on subjects that animate readers is a sure way to build traffic.
Always write with accessible language and tone. Resist alienating new readers with too much “inside baseball” references or too many inside jokes. Leave that for the comment section! Building a loyal readership does depend on building a sense of camaraderie, but entries themselves should always be welcoming to new readers.
Most of all, choose a subject for which you have great passion. You’re far more likely to come up with compelling content if you have an enthusiasm for the subject at hand.
